My Best Self in 2012: The Good, the Bad and the Weirdies

So I haven't fully recuperated from the awesome beach getaway at Potipot island in Zambales, and yet I have to be here, and work on an ambitious plan for a sharp client, otherwise known as the dragon lady. I'm looking through my 17-inch screen for 30 minutes, and not an ounce of creative juice has oozed out. I finally gave up and went out of my cube to think over second hand smoke and cheap latte from the vendo machine.

Then I remembered something. In the island, it dawned on me. It's crystal clear that I work best when I stop pretending to be normal. How did I ~~miss~~ resist that all these years?

Three days with a bunch of success-driven, winning-hungry women made me realize two things. First, the ocean can drown my stress, and second, we are as weird as each one in the group.

ME: I noticed that all of us have quirks, like we're all weird in our own ways. That I'm weird, and you're weird, and J is weird, and N is weird, and weird people work brilliant together. Now I know why I belong here and not there (pertaining to my previous job)

BOSS: You only realized that NOW?

ME: Yeah, isn't that weird?

And though it's a bit too late to start a 2012 resolution, and my yearly goals of being punctual and giving up Coke has been a grand slam fail, hours of lying on the sands and looking through the skies in that pretty little island gave me one big push in achieving the best of what and who I can be in 2012. It's as simple as knowing that my quirky ways, insane ideas and stubborn beliefs are but part of my blueprint, exactly how my Creator designed me. So I may be a little weird, different and stubborn, but with self-understanding, right attitude and good set of friends and mentors (which I luckily have!), I found my spot and earned the right to say that I'm where I'm meant to be, at least at this very moment.

Right here and in all of 2012, I can be my best weird self. No holds barred. With that, eating this ugly frog and will come up with a winning plan before the day ends.

POWERDRESSING: You Want the Part? Then Dress the Part!

Are you like me who works best when dressed best? Do you also feel mighty and undefiable when you put on your power dress or perfect pumps? Do you feel naked not wearing your classic pearl earrings? Then we have a lot to talk about!

I work in a very relaxed environment, where my attire will only depend on my schedule. I can wear trendy clothes on normal days, LBDs during night events and suit pants during client meetings. This works perfectly for me since I can be in my sexy denim jeans and Chucks one day, and in my pencil cut suit skirt the next. Couldn't be happier!

Anyways, I'll stop getting excited and on to our discussion. :)

Power dressing refers to the style of clothing, accessories, hair and even makeup, that is intended to make the wearer look competent and more authoritative. Power dressing exudes confidence and assertiveness, particularly in the workplace. Power dressing came into play in the 80’s where it generally meant use of expensive clothes with sharp, hard lines, and unlike other fashion trends, this concept did not change much. Instead, the usual black, gray and pearls are now accompanied by new options like colorful leather blazers, classy bags and and gorgeous scarves. Although there are numerous options nowadays, we still need to be careful not to confuse corporate attires and business casuals with our usual rotation of party clothes. Here are some accepted guides in power dressing at work:

1. ALL ABOUT SUITS: Suits play an important part in every corporate setting. This is what the bosses wear when there are major pitches, presentations, executive meetings or every time money and business is on the line. Suits display the charisma, the class, the power needed to make a maximum impact on every person in the room.Slimmer cuts, straighter lines, lighter fabrics are in these days. Solid dark colors like black, grey and navy blue or pinstriped suits are still best. Needless to say, you have to invest in some good pairs. In my opinion, a suit skirt brings the lioness in every girl!

2. SHOES: Shoes with 1- to 3-inch heels are appropriate, should be polished and in good condition. Steer away from sandals, and invest more on closed toe and heel pumps.

3. HAIR: Hair should be neat and natural looking. Dyed hair are fine (I always have red/copper/brown hair!). Unnatural looking hair are not, and I'm talking about pink, peach, yellow, you get the drift.

4. NAILS: Well-groomed, short or mid-length, and single-color painted nails as well as french manicures are acceptable.

5. ACCESSORIES: Trendy or classy jewelries are good, as long as kept at minimum. Pearls still dominate the corporate world. And sorry, but nose, tongue and eyebrow piercing will never make the cut.

6. MAKE-UP: Office makeup should never be wild or too bold. Earth colors are preferred, and natural look is favored. Be careful with shimmers, too. Of course we want to look beautiful, but too much make-up in the workplace may send wrong signals to your boss or workmates.

These are just basic things to remember, and generally applies to very conservative office settings. (Trust me, I've been there). It's important to observe your own work environment and make a good judgment on what's appropriate and acceptable. The Company Movers (bosses) can be a good template. Too bad for me because my own template has a truly rich taste, that I can only hope to afford her shoe brands! LOL. One day!

Every office can be different, and we also don't like the rules to keep us from expressing our individuality right? So it's up to us to find the perfect balance.

As the old saying goes, “dress for the job you want, not the one you have.”

The Ones Who Change the World

My goal of blogging thrice a week still seems like a stretch. I'm lost for words after a long haul meeting, countless emails and building an unbelievably tricky Comms Plan. It's the start of the week, and I'm already pumping adrenaline since this morning with a diet consisting of iced white mocha, california maki and Coke.

But the Big Man had other plans of ending this day.

By mid-afternoon, I got a glimpse of what's in store for me in the coming months, and probably the rest of the year - career wise at least. I have some pretty bad-ass mountains to cover, and new territories to win. I feel like a denim fabric that's about to be washed, stretched and abused, only to come out in a perfect pair of jeans with a lot of character. Scared? I'd like to say overwhelmed, but downright excited.

I wasn't given big guns to win small fights. So 2012, I'm so ready for the battle.

As my boss put it on the last day of 2011, "Dang, you have bigger fishes to fry!"

In other news, before drowning in the maelstrom of events, I'm off this weekend to this petite beauty in Zambales called Potipot Island.

Signs of Aging: On Choosing the Right Shoes

You know the things that you used to endure during your younger days? Like all night long gimmicks, pitchers of cheap cocktails, dancing 'til the sun is up or simply surviving everyday without the convenience of vans, taxis or car?

In the office, we fondly call it "lakas ng kabataan" (strength of youth). Those golden days when you feel like your body is a pumped up machine that can take on anything; and no stress, lack of sleep or fatigue can stop you. I'll be 27 in a few months, and for an age considerably young, I can already feel juvenile signs of wear and tear. My metabolism had slowed down (my weight used to swing up and down in a snap of a finger), long hours standing or walking in the mall leaves me with sore ankles and my caffeine and alcohol tolerance has decreased a bit. Very little changes, nothing really dramatic, but still noticeable.

Among these changes, the one that sucks that most is the fact that I can no longer walk in high heels for a long time. It saddens me to realize this. Shoes is one thing I really adore, possibly more than makeup. I used to attend the university in 3 or 4 inch pumps, commuting from Las Piñas to Manila and I walk the streets in a breeze. I tried doing it again these days and I ended up buying a pair of cheap slippers.

High heels give me tremendous feeling of power and confidence, and it often translates to successful presentations, accounts being won and momentous events. But age, weight and muscle fatigue are now part of the calculation, and I now have to take precautionary measures so I won't end up in a cast.

1. Bring extra flats or slippers in your purse, ALL THE TIME. This will come handy for unexpected long walks.

2. Go to the office wearing flats, and change into heels before entering the building. New Yorkers do it. I said flats, not rubber tsinelas.

3. Wear flats or flip-flops especially on weekends. There are a lot of gorgeous flats in the market nowadays, so you don't have to give-up your style. Alternate flats, low heels and high heels so your feet can get a break.

4. Get a foot and leg massage once in while, (do I hear weekly, ladies?), it will relax your muscles and pamper you at the same time.

5. Put your legs up against the wall before you sleep. Do this for 10 minutes to avoid varicose veins due to poor blood circulation.

6. Soak your tired feet in warm water. Add oil essences or salts for a more relaxing experience. I do this while sipping my night coffee, you should try it.

7. CHOOSE YOUR SHOES WISELY!

- Go for lower height (2.5 to 3 inches isn't so bad!)

- Go for thicker heels because it provides more support and sturdy balance

- Shoes with platforms provide more comfort and are easier to walk

- Get your shoes from trusted brands, not necessarily expensive, but don't be overly stingy. There are valid reasons behind the price: materials used, quality, design, craftsmanship.

As for me, I learned to enjoy various kinds of footwear, from slippers to pointed flats, to kitten heels and sky-high f*ck me shoes. I don't discriminate! I'm in the office working on my computer all day today, and so I'm wearing a comfortable, mid-heel black leather pumps, about 2.5 inches. My taller babies can wait for out of office events in the coming weeks. It's exciting!!! :)

Lucky They're In Love With Their Bestfriend!

I'm not a natural romantic. A late bloomer if you may, I can account all my crushes in this lifetime on one hand. I also find it very hard to show affection especially when I was younger. I get goosebumps when schoolboys send me gifts and flowers, and I roll my eyes with cheesy lines from songs or movies.

If not for my Sweetie, who's been very patient in showering me with affection for the last 7 years, I might still be the same old distant person. How can you not love a guy who notices a new haircut, who's always a willing chauffeur for me and my girlfriends and calls in the middle of the day to remind you how beautiful you are.

But this post is not about my story. But I'm kilig all the same, I just have to share it!

It's nothing less magical than a Nicholas Sparks inspired movie.

My cousin Marie recently married her high school bestfriend, Jeff. Nope, they are not highschool buddies-turned-sweethearts who stormed through college and got married. In fact, Jeff used to date Marie's best friend. They haven't seen each other for almost a decade, have spoken sporadically through college and lost touch when they started working. They both had strings of unsuccessful relationships, and Marie had her share of assholes. She then worked in United Arab Emirates, while Jeff traveled in different countries as an Engineer.

Last October 2010, Marie got an unexpected call from Jeff who was then assigned in Dubai. They saw each other again after so many years, and the attraction was undeniable. They dated for exactly one week. ONE WEEK! On Jeff's last day of assignment in Dubai, he brought Marie to the mountain park of Jebel Hafeet, and stunned her when he suddenly wrapped a diamond ring around her finger. I can almost see Marie's blushing face when she told me about it! I even teased her of the local OPM, Isang Linggong Pag-ibig (a week of Love).

Jeff left for a few more weeks, went back to UAE for Marie, and never left her side since then. They got married in the Philippines, a year after being reunited, last December 2011. Their wedding was so fun, so light and just plain beautiful! The couple is so cool; the entourage was dressed in different bright colors while everything was adorned with their black and white motif. They also exchanged I DOs wearing white Lacoste sneakers. Darn cute!

Their pre-nup pictorial was done in an instant, and there was technical glitch during the video presentation, but nothing can ruin their big day! They are the true testament that the celebration of love and marriage matters the most. Everything else, the gorgeous gown, the expensive gifts nor the very generous servings of Sashimi are just but bonuses. Marie, ever so beautiful in her vintage lace gown (reception), just laughed and said "Okay lang yan, ang haba naman ng AVP eh, para inuman na agad!"

Hay. Fairy tales still do come true! And every girl can have their very own love story. We just have to believe. :)

New Year, New Look

For my blog that is. Finally.

After two years of loving my old template, being too-busy-to-figure-this-out, or just plain tamad, I finally had some sense in me to change it. What better time to do it than the start of the year when we all ought to feel brand new! Thank God for the super friendly blogger interface. I'm no techy girl after all.

So cheers to a colorful, crisp and clean template with wider body and fewer clutter on the side. I hope it's this easy to fix real life's mess, but who knows, this can be a good way to practice. Keep your deeds clean, add more color to your life, manage your time and space, and discard things that can weigh you down. Makes perfect sense. :)

FOTD: Holiday Look 2011

Christmas is the most colorful season in the Philippines, and probably the world. With parties, reunions and get together left and right, it can be troublesome to think about what clothes and makeup to wear. I seldom wear full makeup during family affairs, we're so closely knit that I feel most comfortable with them, so showing up au naturelle is never a problem. In fact, weekends and holidays are when I let me skin breathe and produce as much oil as it wants. But last Christmas, while waiting for my chronically late relatives, I decided to play with my makeup and come up with a simple, easy to follow Holiday look. I got a handful of compliments for it and so I hope you'll find it helpful and like it as well.

I came up with Teal and Gunmetal eyes, Coral cheeks and Nude lips.

Step 1: Prepare the face (Wash, Tone, Moisturize, Protect)

: Products used are Celeteque Brightening Facial Foam, Human Nature Tomato Toner, BSKIN BB Cream, Obagi-C Sunguard

Step 2: Cover flaws and even out skin tone to create the perfect canvass

: Products used are Covergirl concealer for the undereye, Maybelline ClearSmooth Minerals Healthy Powder Foundation,

Step 3: Define your eyebrows. This is a key step each time you apply makeup. Properly defined brows will frame the face nicely and put more emphasis on the elements of your face

: Products used are Ever Bilena brow pencil in brown and Charm Travel Pro V3 brow brush

Step 4: Create dramatic teal and gunmetal eyes perfect for Christmas dinners

: Products used are Dollface ES palette (Teal & Dark Green for the crease, Gunmetal for outer V, Silver for inner V), Everyday Minerals ES (Highlighter under the brows), Estee Lauder Double Wear Mascara

Step 5: Be ready to blush and pout, and by that I mean swipe some coral blush and sport nude, juicy lips!

: Products used are Nichido Gentle Peach lipstick topped with Avon shiny gloss in coral. A good trick for nude lips is to apply some liquid foundation on your lips and dab some powder before applying your lipstick. This will cover the real color of your lips, especially for girls who have pigmented puckers. For my cheeks, I used Maybelline Expert Wear LE Pinch of Coral.

You may opt to dust some mineral veil to seal your makeup. I used Physician's Formula Mineral Veil, but on some occasions, I just use mineral powders and it works fine, too.

Here's the final look. The whole routine took me about 30 minutes.

Last and most important step is to relax, smile, and just enjoy every minute of Christmas with the people you love. Celebrating the Savior's birth with people who loves you with or without makeup, is the best gift ever!

I want to learn a new language and actually started self-studying Spanish. I'm slowly filling up my Belle de Jour Planner, and it's hinting that this girl will have a lot in her plate this year!

CALL FOR HELP: Thousands Left Homeless in Negros Oriental

To my dear readers,

I was supposed to post about a BB cream I recently tested but opted to give way to call for help instead. My Christmas List Would Have Been This

I know, it's too late to make a wish list when Christmas is just five days away, but I'll make one anyway.

This is the season when everyone is occupied and all thoroughfares are packed regardless of the hour. My colleague told me it took her an hour to get a cab from Makati to Quezon City and I candidly answered it's normal before she shrieked that it happened at the dead hour of 2:30 AM. But I'm not one to complain about anything at all, Christmas is my favorite season and I don't intend to bloat my ego when I tell you that I blow my bonus and part of my savings in buying gifts for other people, that I actually forget to think about what I want for myself.

I've been an independent head for the past six years, and have not received any financial support or lavish gifts whatsoever from my parents that whenever I want something, it's a given that I have to get it for myself. It's not something to brag about but I'm not comfortable receiving expensive gifts from whoever, not even my boyfriend. If it's more that ten grand, I feel shy and awkward about it that I automatically want to say no. If it's not pride, and I'm quite sure it's not, then I don't know how else to call it. Mahiyain?

In the several occasions that I have to write a wish list for the traditional monito-monita with my colleagues, cousins and friends, I find myself wanting the simplest things and often unable to finish the required number of wish that is three that I usually end up asking my mom or my Sweetie what they want so they can just have what I'll get. True story.

I'd like to believe that at my age, I still happen to like material things but gain inspiration and happiness from the comfort and love of people around me.

So here's the wish list that can make this cheapo girl really happy!

1. Paperback collection of Harry Potter

I was able to finish the HP series from lend outs back in HS. It will be great to have the complete set in my shelf as this is one of the first books I actually finished in 48 hours.

2. Hot Pink of Moss Green Water Bottle (2 Liters)

I cannot reiterate further the importance of keeping yourself hydrated. It can do wonders for your skin and overall health and the best way to ensure that you're getting enough is to have 2 liters of water on your table everyday. Drink up!

Grilled cheese sandwich is perfect to go with my favorite cup of coffee. This will come handy during the Sunday afternoon sessions with mama.

I want to expand my book collection and make sure that my nieces, nephews and future children will not ran out of choice; never mind that I have books in every nook and corner of my itsy, bitsy, tiny room.

I have to admit that I'm an old soul and house my laptop in the fugly, black, generic bag that came along with the purchase. It's about time to "brand" my baby with my signature choice of red and/or organic prints.

6. Cross Trainers

My white Dunlop running shoes I bought from KL four years ago finally gave up. I'm thinking of getting a Cross Trainers instead of Running Shoes so that it can be used for a variety of activities but when I visited the Nike website to canvass for my next pair, I got interested with their finding the right shoes test and here are their recommendations for someone who has a low arch and overpronation stride.

Hmm, not exactly the style and color I wanted, but health and safety comes first. My colleague broke her foot last week (albeit from barefoot dancing, don't ask me how LOL) and I personally brought her to Makati Med and witnessed how serious it can be. She now has fiber cement on her foot and will probably need pinning and will be immobile for six weeks! Six freakin' weeks! How sad especially for the Christmas break.

Another option is this cute, orange shoes from Adidas Climacool Ride Shoes Collection, but I have to check if it fits my foot profile. I recommend you also take the test online or ask assistance from store personnel to find the best shoes for you.

I honestly can't think of anything else as of the moment. I'm not really sold with the idea of a wish list anyway because it's always more exciting to open gifts when you're clueless. For me, asking for what you like kills the thrill, but oh well, better than getting a sick gift of photo album or a set of hanky! LOL. And then again, I'll probably have to dent my wallet and buy these things myself or divert my resources to buy more gifts to my countless relatives, family and friends that I love so much. In that sense, I'm truly rich and so it's really fine not to complete my wish list anymore. :)

My Best Christmas Party Eveeeer!

I'm used to traditional Christmas parties from my past corporate life. Traditional meaning 5-star hotel ballrooms, assigned tables, employee presentations, celebrity guests, and the only thing I miss from the list, unbelievably opulent raffle prizes. (I'm talking about cars, out of the country vacations and top of the line gadgets here)

But people (Filipino staff) from where I'm from hesitated to wear costumes, and so year by year, it's been the expat workers who win the best in costume pot. Such a shame. It would be nice to see Filipinos let their guards down and just have fun. Dressing up is so liberating, right?

So since I jumped back to my old world, I never ran low of reasons to dress up. My job requires me to attend media events and other social gatherings, but the best parties so far are internal ones. It was a long list of Christmas party themes we chose from, but it is just right for our party to be inspired by one of the biggest and most successful events we handled this year: Cirque Du Soleil.

We decided to let go of the dragging employee presentations or formal sit down affair and chose to be entertained instead. After all, 2011 is such a damn tiring but fruitful year for us and that explains why agency people are too hot to unwind, let loose, and end the year with a loud, drunk bang!

The regimen has kept my skin healthy and clear, together with twice a week facial scrubs (St. Ive's Apricot of Human Nature Black Rice Scrub) and monthly facial cleaning. But all the doctors and skin experts I've met said the same thing: never go to bed without removing your makeup. Indeed, calling it a night without making sure your face is free of dirt and makeup is the perfect formula for the next morning's disaster.

Thankfully, there are a hundred and one ways to remove your makeup and make sure your skin is clean and your pores are not clogged before sleeping. There are cleansing oils (Shu Uemura's Cleansing Oil is a top choice albeit quite pricey), OTC makeup removers from L'Oreal, Maybelline and even local brands like Ever Bilena, organic ones like Ilog Maria's Cleansing Milk and the very convenient cleansing wipes/cloths.

One of the brands I've tried is Celeteque DermoScience's Hydration Makeup Remover and Cleansing Facial Wipes (Php 160.00). Although it's ideal to still wash your face with water after using makeup removers, having wipes beside your bed is a good and convenient alternative when you are too tired or in my case last night, too drunk to wash your face (it's my company's Christmas Party so I'm excused, thank you :D)

My notes:

Smells fresh and clean

Soft on skin

Non-drying and gentle even to sensitive skin

Very effective in removing stubborn makeup like eye liners and long wear lipstick

A sheet can clean the whole face, but a second one will finish the job

I wore very heavy, artistic makeup last night and it's the best time to test this product. Pardon the photo, but here's what I removed from my face after a long night of partying. That's a lot don't you think so?

And just to give you an idea how much makeup I have on, see this photo and take note that I haven't even started with contouring and blush application at this stage.

As I've said, it's still best to wash your face with water and cleanser of your choice after using makeup removers. Not only that ensures a face that is free from traces of oils and chemicals, but also the best way to feel refreshed and clean before bedtime.

It's like candyland for the shopaholics who want to score not exactly the most affordable finds but truly interesting and varicose veins worthy pieces. From garments, housewares, unique gift ideas, jewelries, skin care products, home-made pastries and jams to what nots. But most exciting are the cosmetics and other beauty finds for makeup addicts out there!

The Beauty & Minerals stall is one that you shouldn't miss. My Ventosa Cupping Therapy Experience

Massage is one of my guilty pleasures. I get my fix at least once a week, and I get cranky if I don't. It's part of my weekly expenses but it didn't take long to realize that my massage addiction can really mean serious cost. If I get a massage for PhP 500 (USD12 USD), that means I have to alot PhP 2,000 a month, and that excludes my gas going to the spa. Then came the smaller chains that offer massage for as low as PhP 350, which is not bad at all. Just my luck, they also started offering home services at Php 250 which is really a steal! So for some months now, home service has been my staple.

But last Sunday, I suddenly missed the actual feeling of going to the spa and not worry about my dog attacking the therapist on her way out. LOL. There are also a handful of new establishments that opened around our village and so I trooped to Chetawan Thai Massage. As I was parking, I noticed a lit signage from across that is Banahaw Heals Spa. I've seen several branches of this but never tried it because one, I simply dislike the name, and second, the locations of other branches are dubious. (i.e. I saw one near a girly bar!)

But since this branch is newly opened and is in a decent area, I decided to fight back my homing pigeon attitude and gave it a shot.

The Ventosa Cupping Therapy works best if followed by a deep tissue massage. I felt a hot, stingy sensation on my back after the therapy which probably means more blood circulation near the skin's surface. It was a nice sensation. :)

The only problem is that the Banahaw 5-in-1 massage is but a fail. The therapists' pressure was inconsistent, and she only used one type of long stroke in everything. She also massaged my back half the time and therefore left my tired legs and feet unhappy.

If there's a consolation, that is I liked their oil very much which is a combination of mint and chocolate that smelled so yummy! Otherwise, I'm off the door to try other spas around Las Piñas.

What I Think About Makeup and My Thursday FOTD

Makeup is not JUST makeup. It's more than pigments and textures and wearability. It's an art. I'm amazed on how makeup makes women look and feel more beautiful, and I've seen how it has evolved so much in the past years that I have learned to respect its power and balance its use in my life. It's a tool in my everyday arsenal that helps me hide battle scars and up my confidence just before a heart pounding event.

I'm right brained who thinks with words, pictures, sounds and colors and hates to use lined notebooks because I feel jaded and limited. I express myself in the way I speak (if you're my friend, you know how vivid I tell my stories - hello Team E!), the way I dress up, how I keep my hair long for the longest time, and yes - how I wear makeup.

I'm in an industry where looking good is a must. My former boss in Public Affairs and PR told me that when you're in PA and dealing with different stakeholders (from grassroots to the most powerful people/government in the country), you can never be just smart or just beautiful. You have to be both - substantial and presentable. I keep that thought in my pocket every single day.

Being presentable is not measured with the amount of makeup you put on, but with how one carries herself, and expresses her thoughts in all ways possible. In my case, I use makeup to paint my moods and project my energy. If I need to be powerful and sexy, there's my red lipstick. If I need to deal with children of art, there's my golden yellow and blue eye shadows. If I'll be on my feet the whole day, I'm friends with neutrals and earth tones. There are days when I don't have the juice to put anything on, and I feel perfectly fine with it.

Today, I want to be perky but serious. So I go for rimmed eyes and magnetic coral lips.

Dang is Manila Bound!

You can never fully appreciate a huge painting, if you're just inches away from it. You need to take a few steps back and marvel at the whole picture. Or something poetic like that. This is exactly how I view Manila. Having lived in the Metro my whole life, and finished college in the walled city of Intramuros, visiting Manila for pleasure is far down my list, if it's actually there at all.

But a failed trip to the beach during the long weekend - thanks to the rain - left me with no choice but just drive around to keep me sane and keep the thoughts of surfing lessons or kayaking from haunting me. To my surprise, I found myself seeing Manila in a whole new light, and decided to take on a challenge. Together with my trusty driver and travel buddy (hello, S!), I decided to survive Manila and enjoy it with only Php 1,000 (about 22 USD) in my pocket.

Since this is an impromptu trip, I failed to bring a decent camera so please bear with the photos, some of which I had to borrow.

1. Cartimar - Leveriza, Pasay City

Cartimar is truly a pet lover's haven. You can find rows upon rows of pet shops selling all kinds of animals, from birds, snakes, rodents, cats, sea creatures and of course, dogs! I visit Cartimar once in a while to buy cheaper pet supplies for my furry friends. I was able to score dog food, vitamins, grooming tools and toys for about 10-20% less than mall prices. I don't like going to the zoo for personal reasons, and walking the aisles of Cartimar with adorable pets waiting for their destined handlers feels so much better. Since it can get hot inside the alleys, I got myself a big cup of Nescafe Ice from the numerous food carts inside.

2. National Museum and Museong Pambata

I only have faint memories of these museums from my elementary field trips, and a documentary show featuring the scarce resources of the supposedly premier museum in the country stirred my interest to visit National Museum again. For one, I wanted to support the establishment that struggles to keep Filipino art and culture in tact, and second, it will be nice to see different collection of paintings, artifacts, fossils and pieces of history with my adult state of mind. Picture taking is allowed but strictly no touching and no flash photography. The National Museum is so huge with several collections namely Fine Art, Archaeology, Ethnography, National History and more. Divisions include Anthropology, Zoology, Botany, Geology, Archeology, Arts etc. We arrived a little late and was only able to check the Fine Art collection and some Zoology collection. The building is old and obviously needs refurbishments, several rooms are also closed for renovation, but we had a good time seeing the works of heroes and National Artists, where we were awed once again by the sheer vastness of Spoliarium by Juan Luna. We are scheduling another visit to complete the tour, and I suggest you do the same and help our National Museum build funds for upgrading and maintenance. FYI, some rooms are not air conditioned (which is very bad for the artifacts/art pieces) due to lack of funds to pay electricity bills.

The Museong Pambata is a hands-on discovery place for children, hoping to answer questions of young minds and stimulate them to be more inquisitive. The museum is well-maintained and each room/section is air conditioned. My favorite section is the writers/illustrator's room, where walls are painted with stories and vivid characters illustrated by successful Filipino writers and cartoonists. The only disappointment is that my then favorite section (I had my picture taken here when I was in Grade 4), the Environment, is closed for renovation. :(

3. Walled City of Intramuros and Manila Cathedral

It's great to be back in Intramuros, its walls bring back a lot of happy memories back in college when my life was as simple as walking along the walls with my friends while waiting for our boring desktop publishing class which starts at 7:00 PM! I didn't have the chance to sit on the walls and wait for sunset this time since we have to catch a show, but driving around the walled city brings this nostalgic, calming effect of Old Manila on me. :)

4. Ballet Manila Show "Maynila ni Juan" at Star Theater

Who says you can't watch a ballet show without breaking the bank? Aside from my nieces' ballet recitals in CCP, I'm always on the lookout for the complementary ballet shows of Star City featuring no less than the Ballet Manila. Ballet Manila was founded 16 years ago by the country's Prima Ballerina, Ms. Lisa Macuja-Elizalde. They perform in Star Theater every Saturday and Sunday, 7:30 PM. The shows will run for a couple of weeks and its themes are seasonal. It's my third time to catch them, and they have a new offering "Maynilad ni Juan", a comic ballet/musical show featuring life in Manila. It's light, fun and offers a breath of fresh air from the Hollywood movies and mainstream shows that bombard us everyday.No picture taking allowed, but I snapped one from my phone, no flash I promise!

Star City also has shops selling toys, clothes, knick knacks and souvenirs. I was very tired and hungry and so we munched on some jumbo TJ hotdog sandwich, fruit shakes and ice cream and call it a night.

Gratitude List: October Edition

Lost in Space. That's the perfect line to describe the last three weeks that transpired. You can find me in the office until 10pm; 8pm when I'm really lucky. The last three Saturdays were spent preparing for the following week's events. I lost track of TV shows, had to turn down several dinner dates with the Sweetie and my friends, flaked out on my Friday Night Club, all while borrowing strength from my cube mate Chris, who always tells me that weekends are only for the weak!

My plate was extraordinarily full, and with series of major events and simultaneous activities, things were bound to go wrong - and some eventually did. For the first time ever since I switched back to my old career, I felt really disappointed and low. I have this nasty habit of blaming myself even for things that are literally beyond my control, and I take this seriously.

But the Big Man never ever fails. After a series of sleepless nights, physical and mental fatigue and disappointments one after the other, I was more than ready to break down and do a Mariah Carey (in short, cry). But it's really in hardships that one's character is built, and it didn't hurt to have some kickass bosses to ~~guide~~ pull you up.

At the end of the day, and after some shit that was necessary for balance, what's left are scars from a battle I'd like to think I've won.

Therefore, it's a tradition to post a Gratitude List.

But, I'm excited for your new role, this is where the real battle begins.

30 for 30 List: No Red Meat for 30 Days

So many things happened the last few months of my life, with my career switch and lifestyle changes that go with it that I barely have time to check my 30 for 30 list. Good thing I decided to take it slow, so I still have three years and six months to complete it. And while my 30 for 30 list can afford to have it's sweet time, my life and career on the other hand is having a fast, crazy twist. It deserves a totally separate post.

It's a beautiful Monday when I complained about feeling extraordinarily dull and lacking energy. I'm usually hyperactive, lives with five hours of sleep and works ten hours a day. I rarely stay home idle on weekends because I abide by the "life is too short" mantra. But the answer to my strange dullness struck me like a lighting in an open field. Pinned on my office corkboard are piles upon piles of fastfood delivery receipts. Garbage in, garbage out, it's crystal clear. I'm eating too much processed food, meat and sugar. Which reminded me that it's time for the 30th item on my 30 for 30 list.

30. Don’t touch red meat for 30 days. Please, spare me the vegetarian vow. (Hello, Dea!) I’m not as tough as Dea, she’s one amazing girl! And so I’ll be honest and realistic, I’ll ditch red, but occasionally eat fish and chicken. I just can’t survive on leaves and fruits, not with my schedule, I will definitely faint on the 3rd day.

Red meat is hard to digest, and stays in your system for five days! It's gross if you think of it. So it's high time to revamp my diet. Refusing to let anothey day pass, I banned red meat that very same day. It was a struggle for the first few days, trying very hard to replace my usual chunks of red meat with greens and meat substitutes like tofu. The toughest day was when I had to turn down a fat, juicy cheese hungarian sausage in onions and chillies. I wanted to die that moment. I was so tempted that I refrained from looking at the dish at all, just like a kid who is sure to fail a marshmallow test.

My mom on the other hand, was very happy about it and started stocking fish, prawns and squid for me. Towards the end of my 30 days, I felt lighter and my restroom visits were a breeze. I lost four pounds, that can be due to waterloss or such, but losing weight is not my motivator to avoid red meat in the first place, so it's really just a plus point. Incidentally, I was also introduced to Bodivance at this time, which doubled the pace of my shift to a healthier lifestyle. Another friend, C, was doing his no pork diet during that time, too. The universe made it all happen!

After completing the challenge, I happily munched on some giant hotdogs, self reward of some sort, but knew that I didn't miss it as much as I thought. I occasionally eat red meat now, and go for seafood and chicken more often. And I started enjoying greens beyond the usual appretizer salad.

What's most important is not the weightloss, nor the bragging rights of completing a challenge, but the realization that I'm in control and that I can chose to live heathy. To quote my former boss:

"It's not always about the number of years, but the quality of life you lived."

With that, I can move on to conquer the next thing on my list. :)

Product Review: Obagi-C SunGuard SPF30

For health and beauty advocates, it’s a mortal sin not to use sun protection. Why not, it’s a medical fact that sun exposure is the main culprit for premature skin aging. And when I said use, I mean religiously applying sun block everyday, be it sunny or rainy. Unfortunately, UV rays can still affect our skin even on a cloudy day. What’s more alarming is the notion that we only need sun protection when we go to the beach or join outdoor activities, and thus, many people resort to applying ultra high SPFs on the beach while using none during their usual days at work or school. It’s like suddenly arming someone with high caliber firearms one day and leaving him helpless the rest of the year. Yes, I treat my skin as another human being, and so I’m continuously in search for anything that can heal, maintain and PROTECT it.

Last August, I got the chance to attend the Obagi 360 event, where they presented their total skin care program. Obagi has long established its name in the skin care industry, with their innovative products and services that has helped thousands of people around the world. We got the chance to check out their wide range of products for different skin problems like acne and damaged skin. While I’m still saving up for their much talked about Blue Peel, I’m already quite impressed with the Obagi products I’ve tried so far which is the Obagi Condition and Enhance line of gentle cleanser, toner and smoothing lotion. And for the last two months, I am once again pleased with their Obagi-C RX System C-Sunguard, which I’ll be talking about in details.

What I think about the Obagi C-SunGuard SPF 30:

• Creamy consistency that glides smoothly on my skin

• A bit sticky upon application but feels smooth and light after a few minutes of application – it’s a big improvement from the previous Obagi Condition and Enhance Healthy Skin Protection that I’ve used before which is a lot oilier

• Has SPF 30 that is at par with the recommended protection needed everyday

• Smell is a little “medicine-y” but not overpowering

• Protects me from both UVA/UVB which translates to protection from both darkening and aging

• A little goes a long way. I’ve used it for two months but my 90ml bottle is still about 60% full

• Best of all, no rash or breakouts on my ultra sensitive skin!

Admittedly, it’s a bit pricey than other sun protection products in the market. It’s a relief to know that it can last for a few months so if you divide its price by the number of days that you’re happily protected, then you’ll realize your money’s worth. If you have the money to spend, then Obagi C-SunGuard SPF 30 is worth trying. After all, you are buying not only satisfaction but skin protection that you’ll never regret 10 or 20 years from now.

Please don’t limit sun protection to your face. Always apply sun block on your neck and chest area. Remember, a smooth face resting on a wrinkled neck is twice as bad, so don’t scrimp on sun protection! Same is true with your arms and legs, you don’t only protect yourself from skin aging but skin cancer as well.

Lastly, there are many sun protection products in the market, you don’t have to get the most expensive one, but rather find the one that works best for you and your budget.

My Version Of Pink is as Hot & Rockin'

It's a fact that most girls ~~like~~ love pink. I like to blame the parents who automatically buy everything pink right after the ultrasound result shows a pipi. Normal baby girls are clad in pink, with pink pillows, blankets and mittens. It's a personal theory that this stereotyping leads to majority of the female population liking this color to adulthood. My mom is as guilty but not quite successful in making me sweet and ladylike. (Hello, mama!)

There are always a few exceptions on this pink rule, and I'm one of them. I'm not trying to be unique, and my blog will probably tell you that I like hot pink, because it's the only one I can tolerate. Baby pink, bubble gum pink, old rose, and everything else pink just look blah on me. As early as first grade, I rejected anything pink on my wardrobe. I was very much in love with green in Elementary, the yellow green of Crayola to be exact. In early highschool, and probably because I dated a rockstar wannabe, I favored darker colors. My cabinet contained piles and piles of blacks, midnight blues and gunmetals. I also tried finding black lipstick, but settled for plum. I think I made my parents worry a bit that I'm into witchcraft and pentagrams! I only started adding colors to my wardrobe in early college, pairing my usual blacks with whites and greens. I remember my college friend Y (she's 30+ during that time) told me that when I get older, pink will grow on me. I guess she's right, because I started wearing hot pink after college!

At present, I've learned to appreciate and mixmatch colors not only in my wardrobe but in almost anything. From furnitures, to gadgets, bedsheets, curtains, artwork, shoes, and of course, clothes. I don't think baby pink will ever grow on me though. I favor red instead. It's my favorite mood upper. It's classy just like black, looks great on my fair skin, and exudes an endeniable sexy appeal. And that explains why I have a red car, red digital camera, red blowdryer, red makeup brushes, four pairs of red shoes, several red bags and shoes. Even my nails are usually red, and just recently, I joined the red head club (after a dye hiatus for six months) once again.

Red is definitely my pink. And that makes me a pink girl, after all. :)

More Than The Eyes Can See -- U.B.E. with my blogger GFs

I started blogging some three years ago, for the sheer pleasure of writing and a wicked attempt to document my life somewhere my parents won't see. I started with writing journal entries in word document and kept them locked in my desktop PC. Independence from them had its own complications you know, but keeping my thoughts and feelings to myself (and eventually to web logs) doesn't change the fact that I love them dearly.

Forward to today, blogging has taken a whole new meaning in my life. It has become more than a hobby, a breaktime entertainment or a mood upper. It's an outlet for me to express my ideas, communicate my thoughts (big and small), shout and plead to the universe, learn new things, and document happenings - no matter how trivial sometimes - in a seemingly overspeeding life of a young woman. But more importantly, blogging led me to meet new people, associates and friends. Having conversations with "virtual" friends also made me more sensitive towards my offline relationships, learning how much I should value the people I'm blessed to have.

To my surprise, online friendships slowly leveled up to personal meetings, and eventually, tangible friendships with some of the most sensible, accomplished women I know. It's funny and weird when you meet for the first time and obviously know so much about each other, just like meeting a character who jumps out from your favorite novel. Either that, or you're each other's stalkers.

And as a bonus, my real life BFF (yay, that kinda sounds like we're in showbiz!), who's also the one behind my movement to blogspot, is with me in building this wonderful relationships with our blogger girlfriends.

Product Review: Bodivance

I'm not very new to sports or working out. While I don't dare call myself an athlete, I make sure I don't live a sedentary lifestyle. But gone are the days when I can play badminton all Saturday and Sunday long (I'm a varsity player back in HS), nor workout after office when I still had a 9-5 corporate job . Moving to ahensya life, I now usually work 10-11 hours a day, travel back and forth for 3 hours, sleep for 6 hours and spend the remaining hours trying to have a balanced social life.

Heavens forgive me but the only workout I get nowadays are my 15 minute walk in Makati streets, wearing high waist skirts rather than jogging pants. If I have no work, not hangover or am not too exhausted on Saturday morning, then I alternately jog or attend fitness classes. For this reason alone, I have come to a realization to make sure that I get the most out of my Saturday workouts. Ang along came Bodivance.

I have less and very minor cramps when running, and it inspires me to get back on my feet and be more active again. If only for that, then Bodivance has served its purpose.

Ever since I decided to leave my comfort zone and jump in for a wild ride to follow my heart (on my 6th month now), I knew traveling has to take the backseat for a while. I used to go on trips at least thrice a year, but now that I’m a happy and creative slave and no longer an employee with a fat paycheck tied to her desk and virtual library 9am-5pm (I used to manage a multinational company’s legal and corporate files), every trip has to be planned and saved for in advance.

But, it’s never wrong to daydream – which exactly is the inspiration behind the new fragrance collection of the jet setting style icon Paris Hilton: Paris Hilton Passport.

My personal notes:

- The packaging, which features different anime-inspired image of Paris Hilton, no matter how playful and cute, is really just too young for my taste. Paris Hilton fans and younger generations (teenagers to early twenties) will likely be mesmerized and add them to their Paris Hilton collectibles.

PARIS is sweet, peachy and musky. This fragrance is more appropriate for night use, think of dance night outs with your girlfriends or an intimate dinner with your beau. This is my least favorite among the trio, as it is too sweet and warm for my taste, and I observed little staining on my shirt, so be careful and just spray on skin.

TOKYO truly is truly fresh and radiant! I smell hints of musk but overall is a perfect blend of citrus and floral scents that lasts at least half a day. This is an appropriate fragrance in a casual day at school or office. Not too tame but never overpowering. This is I think, the “youngest” scent among the three.

SOUTH BEACH, hands down, is the best among the three! I asked some colleagues to try them and South Beach emerged as the crowd favorite. It’s fresh and floral, and perfect for sunny mornings be it on the beach or not. It’s energetic and uplifted my mood with every spray. I’m so addicted with it, I want to buy my own bottle! Lasting power is okay and no staining. J

- The price is reasonable; each 100 ml bottle costs only Php 2,600.

- Paris Passport is now available in major malls nationwide. I saw promos and freebies in some fragrance counters in Makati area, so best to check them out soon.

Who Says You Can't?

Many girls are not very comfortable wearing bold, red lipstick. Why not, the stigma attached to it is still very prevalent in a conservative society like mine. Wearing red lips connotes so many things; from coy, to wild to "easy A", to plain stupid labels like, excuse my word, puta. (sex worker)

But if you're like me who already learned not to give a piss on what people will say, then congratulations, I'm sure you also love that liberating, empowering feeling everytime you swipe your favorite red lippie!

MAC's Russian Red is a crowd favorite. There's also Revlon Fire and Ice and more from NARS but if you want an affordable alternative, try the Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick in Summer Sunset. It's creamy and has a hint of shimmer but no glitters - thank goodness!

I have full lips, so I normally put concealer and powder then line my lips a little thinner than normal, and voila! Keep in mind that red lips work best with 'bare' face, so your puckers can take centerstage and not end up like a party clown. Think of Snow White, you get the drift. :)

HOT PINK and SEXY BLACK: Charm Travel Pro Makeup Brush Set V3

You should have seen me when I first got hold of the Charm Travel Pro V3. My lips automatically smiled its widest and you'll almost see stars come out of my eyes. Why not, just look at the travel-themed packaging and you'll know at once that it's something beautiful and worth checking out. The third version of the Charm Travel Pro is in black and HOTTEST pink, my favorite combination in the world!

It's easy to say that it's love at first sight, but being the very OC and quality conscious me, I know I should put these babies to test before blogging about it. Though honestly, at first look and feel, I knew it's going to be promising.

Some people say packaging is just packaging, but not for me! Just looking at it makes me nostalgic of the few countries I've been to, and all the more excited to save up, and see the rest of the world someday!
See, packaging is not JUST packaging. :)

The inside lining is also screaming hot pink, which I really like.
It's my first brush pouch that isn't black.

I also appreciate that each brush has its own plastic guard.
I still put them on when not in use.

Here aqre my thoughts on each piece:

POWDER BRUSH

This can be used to apply powder foundation or blush and gives good coverage of the face. I use this to apply my powder foundation and on some occasion, it doubles as my blush brush, too. The hair is soft and picks up good amount of powder pigments. Best of all, no bleeding and very minimal shedding, I think I only saw 2 strands after several washes.

STIPPLING BRUSH

This brush is designed to create an airbrushed look and can be used with both powder and cream pigments. In my case, I like using it to apply gel foundation using light strokes and to dust mineral veil to seal my makeup. It’s soft but sturdy enough and did not shed nor bleed when I washed it twice before usage.

ANGLED BLUSH BRUSH

This brush is designed to apply blush perfectly as it “hugs” the shape of your cheeks. It’s also excellent for contouring, something that girls with chubby faces need, like me! Contouring needs practice, and so this baby will surely get a lot of air time among the group. Hair is considerably soft but I discovered that it can get and feel better after I applied deep conditioner.

FOUNDATION BRUSH

Cream, gel and liquid foundation can be hard to apply perfectly without the right tool. I used to apply my liquid foundation using a sponge, but upon trying my hand on my first foundation brush (from a different brand), there’s no way I’m going back to my old ways. Therefore, this is a welcome addition to my foundation brush family. I use it very often, and so my old favorite can get some rest.

CONCEALER BRUSH

This is perfect to conceal my undereye circle and skin imperfections. Using your finger to apply concealer is unhygienic and can cause skin infections, and so owning a concealer brush is a must. The size and coverage of this brush is just perfect to do the job.

EYESHADOW BRUSH ANGLED EYESHADOW BRUSH

Whether you like to apply your eyeshadow wet or dry, you’ll find this brush handy. It’s stiff enough which gives you more control, and can pickup pigments nicely. The angled eyeshadow brush on the other hand is softer, and so I usually use it to apply highlighter under my brows.

EYEBROW BRUSH and FLAT EYELINER BRUSH

The flat liner brush can be used to apply gel liner and powder pigments used to line the eyes. It’s stiff enough but a little thick than the one I’m currently using (also from Charm), and so I just use it to create thick lines for smokey look. I will probably like it better if it’s slanted, too.

I don’t go out of the house without doing my brows. I can’t and I refuse to, so it’s not a surprise that this brush is among the first ones I tried. Unfortunately, I find it a bit small for my taste which is too bad, because I really like how firm but soft the bristles are. I’m sure I can find another way to use it.

BLENDING BRUSH and PENCIL POINT BRUSH

I have a confession, these two are the least used brushes among the set. Why? Because they’re white, and I don’t like seeing them stained and dirty! In my previous experience, it’s really hard to bring brushes like these to their original white state. But if you’re not sick OC like me, then both are great in blending your eye makeup, and even cleaning up pigments that fell off your lids.

SPOOLIE and BENT EYELINER BRUSH

The spoolie is useful to tame the lashes and brows. My only concern is that it’s a bit hard to clean it up when makeup, dirt and oil builds up in the bristles. My tip would be to use cleansing oils or even olive or VCO to break down the grease easily before washing.

I haven’t tried the bent eyeliner brush since I don’t apply eyeliner on a daily basis. I tried maneuvering it and so far, I felt comfortable and in control to draw the perfect line. I’m yet to discover the power of its bent shape that many women rave about!

LIP BRUSH

First, I like how handy it is. The hot pink casing is so cute, you’d think it’s a pocket pen. I recently discovered the joys of applying lipstick using a brush (and economical too as you get all the products in the tube), and how nice it is to have the perfectly shaped lips all the time! Just always make sure to wash your lip brush often as you don’t like bacteria touching your lips, right?

This 14-piece carefully designed and produced brush set is such a steal at Php 2,200. Ideal for enthusiasts, even for beginners. And because it's handy, you're sure not to scrimp on your makeup tools even while you're conquering the world! :) As a proud owner of Charm brushes for years now (even before I get to know the lovely owner), I can definitely vouch for its quality. All my Charm Holiday brushes are still in good shape and so I'm comfident that this latest version of Travel Pro will be in my arsenal for a long long time!

Wonderful Discovery: Celeteque DermoScience Acne Spot Corrector Gel

I've been very kind to myself and refused to lift a finger during the 4-day weekend here in the Philippines. Of course 4 days to camp on bed is too long for me, so I still went out and did groceries, nail treatments, attended my uncle's birthday party and tried my luck in Resorts World Casino with my Friday Night Club (though we did it on a Monday), but I made sure that all activities were done without stress and in my own sweet time. Long weekends are never long enough - agree? But I'm happy, well-rested and all set to go back to work again. :)

On to this wonderful discovery I'm talking about. Since it's been a crazy and busy and wonderfully productive week, all I wanted to do come the long weekend was to get a massage and sleep. That's exactly what I did after the very early TV guesting last Saturday, not knowing that two giant zits will greet me upon waking up.

It's good that I just attended the Celeteque DermoScience event in SM Makati, and it's fortunate that they included a Celeteque Dermo Science Acne Solutions Spot Corrector Gel (among others, thank you!) in the press kit. I immediately applied the gel, took a photo and slept some more. It promises to lessen the swelling and apperance of pimples in 24 hours, and to my surprise, it significantly healed my zits in less than a day! I decided to take more photos to document the progress but please be warned, as it looks a bit off.

Did you see how plump and swelly the pimples were on the first photo? I applied it again this morning (fourth day), and my zits are flat and gone just in time for the first day of work. Making Big Waves

As much as I want to sound all geeky and serious, I was actually just talking about my hair. :)

I have this illusion of waking up with long, wavy, full bodied hair where owning a comb is just an option and no longer necessary. But with super straight hair, curling iron ignorance (and I'm not a fan of heat near my face) and some really big fear of committing to permanent curls - not to mention how hard it is to achieve big, natural curls compared to small, frizzy ones - I resorted to setting instead.

But in a busy ~~day~~ week, all I can do really is to put my hair in a high bun. I twist my towel dried, hip long hair in the morning, and let it down at the end of the day. Alas, I get my dream hair! I tried applying some curling mousse from V05 and the waves and curls improved to its bouncy glory.

EOTD: Salmon Eyes by Dollface

Good morning fellows! An unusual early morning post from me before I get drowned in my work schedule today. I'm set to attend a whole day strategy workshop so I decided to skip dining out last night and went straight home instead to sleep, though it didn't actually happen that way. I tried to pin myself down to bed hoping to be asleep before twelve midnight, but my dollface palette was there, sitting on the same spot for a while now, and it called me. So, time to play and do a little EOTD that I can imitate one of these days.

I played with silver, salmon, shades of brown and black. It's office safe and very wearable during daytime.

Liner: Black (Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner)

Mascara: Dark Brown (Avon Super Shock Mascara)

I took photos from different camera settings to better appreciate it. Just remember to blend like there's no tomorrow to avoid harsh lines, okiedoks?

Product Review: Reb'l Fleur by Rihanna

Aren't we always falling for classy, beautiful things? Oftentimes, fatal attraction starts with the packaging.

When my friend Andrea from Prestige (hello, Andi!) asked me to try out Reb'l Fleur (Rebel Flower) by Rihanna, my first thought was "They (celebrities) launch prefumes left and right." But upon receiving the testers, I was magically drawn to its unique, fierce design which was inspired by the shape of a stiletto heel. If you haven't noticed, I'm a shoe gaga that I'll go naked so long as I have nice shoes and that yes, it's not good to picture it. LOL. Though I have to admit that the bottle, no matter how pretty, is a bit unfriendly with my clumsy hands.

Before I go on with my review, let me just give you a bit of a backgroud about perfumes. It is important to remember that there are 3 'notes' or 'tones' that work together to make a lasting, good fragrance: the TOP, MIDDLE and BASE tones. Top tones include light fragrances like lemon, lemongrass, orange, fir and eucalyptus. Middle notes include aromas like lavender, chamomile, basil and geranium. Base notes include deeper aromas like clove, jasmine and patchouli. Top tone is usually evident on your first sniff, then the middle tone becomes apparent through the day while the base tone is the final stage of the fragrance. Therefore, to fully appreciate a perfume, it is a must to wear it all day and observe it in all stages. It's best to apply it on skin where there's good blood circulation such as wrist and neck. Also, remember that a perfume may smell differently on two individuals since it will mix on a person's natural scent; so what works for your friend may not work for you. It can go as bad as smelling like piss on you, no kidding! It takes time and patience to find one that works with your body chemistry, but it's sure worth it if you'll smell like love the whole day! :)

Here are the tones used to create Reb'l Fleur.

On to my thoughts:

- Packaging is unique and well thought of
- Name Reb'l Fleur is appealing, and suited Rihanna like no other. She has surprised the world with her music, her fashion taste, her outrageous hair and of course, even with her lovelife. Rebellious but no less vulnerable.
- At first whiff, it's sweet, fruity and woody, which tells me it means no nonsense!
- The warm, deep, musky tone became apparent after a couple of hours. I'm not a very big fan of warm, musky tones, especially on a hot, humid day, but I must say Reb'l Fleur smells better after couple of hours on my skin. This will be perfect for summer nights along with flowy dress and tanned skin. :)
- Since it's fruity, sweet but warm, I think it's best suited for young adults and not for teenagers
- I can smell a hint of coconut, which is not bad at all
- Lasting power is good, I applied it in the morning and it stayed with me until late afternoon

Reb'l Fleur may not be my usual choice since I always go for fresh, light tones (given that I live in a very humid city!), but for something that's not on my staple choice, Rihanna's first perfume is worth trying. If you're into warm, woody, sweet tones, and wants to graduate from the teenage, overly fruit scented colognes that you'll find anywhere, then this one is truly for you.

Gratitude List: Of Simple Things and Staying Still

I'd like to believe that my recent calmness and silence are brought about by ~~age~~ growth. What used to be weekend drink fest and 'til dawn dancing in my calendar are now marked with leisure activities, errands and lounging at my cousins' house for late night DVDs, card games, potato balls, crab nuggets and chitchats. Last weekend, I slept 10 hours for two consecutive days and it was painful to part from my bed, not until the last full show of Captain America.

And just like the beautiful sermon by Father Miguel last Sunday, I believe this tranquility I'm feeling is brought about by my decision to stop, slow down, and just stay still. For it is in silence than we begin to listen, to understand. Ever wonder why LISTEN and SILENT have the same letters?

Don't be fooled, my schedule is still filled to the rim, I still have a stressful job, but silence can be achieved without having to camp and shutdown from the world. Just stay still, 10, 15, 30 minutes a day. Whatever is comfortable for you. Meditate if you may. Just stay still, and you'll hear what's there to learn.

So today, I thank the universe for the gift of silence and for simple, happy things. :)

Glambox Airbrush Makeup Workshop is a Yay!

One of the many things that a bride gets so stressed and anxious about is how to get the best makeup for her big day. After all, what's more horrific than washed out makeup that will forever be documented in reel and prints? Thanks to airbrush makeup, women, bride to be or not, can now be sure that her makeup will stay in tact and beautiful until dawn.

I was lucky enough to be invited last Saturday to Glambox's Airbrush Makeup WorkshopNikki Tiu and Sophia Uy in Bulbs Studio, Makati. It was a rainy afternoon full of skin care and of course, everything there is to know about airbrush makeup! It was also a chance for makeup enthusiasts, artists and bloggers to meet each other. I for one, was so happy to see Dea Guwapa again after our last year's Bangkok escapade.

What's Your Version of Forever?

It's always sad to hear unhappy marriage stories. I know some married people, living a life of mediocrity. I'd like to think that I'm a good listener and a sound advisor lest they won't dare share some of the most private things in life. The problems vary from financial crisis, to nosey in-laws, dissatisfaction with their sex lives, infidelity, down to basic incompatibility (you'll never believe how toothpaste triggers quarrels each day). The gravity, the characters and the scenarios differ, but I noticed that the end result remain the same. They hold on to what the majority approves.

For one, a giflfriend who's been married for 8 years, told me she doesn't enjoy making love to her husband anymore. When I told her there's professional help (sex therapists) around, she looked at me like I'm a porn star and dismissed the idea. She said it will offend her husband, and she's too shy to let someone, even a doctor, pry into their bedroom life. Sure, I get the shy part. But really, married for 8 years and you can't even tell your husband he's not a sex machine and they need help?

A guy friend resorted to extramarital activities, because after two kids and a stressful banking career, his wife became boring in bed. He vowed that he loves his wife, and all he wanted from his girlfriends is physical satisfaction. Of course I didn't buy the idea. Recently, his wife found out about his infidelity, made a scene, gave him a curfew and went back to their perfect married lives.

A relative's husband refuses to sell the car despite piling debts, another friend's wife doesn't like to have a child. Not a married tale but a former boss, with all her money and brilliant career, goes to sleep alone in her posh condominium each day because she's in love with a married man - who married his wife for political ambitions.

The stories get nastier, and it saddens me to see that reality is indeed uglier than fiction. I'm in no position to judge how they choose to live their lives, so all I do is strive to be a dependable but objective friend. I tell them what I think from out of the box, some options that might help, and the fact that we're friends, what kind of shit they're in.

I have the highest regard for marriage and the people who are brave enough to take their relationships to the next level. To a point of no return, to forever. I'm amazed on how much they are capable of forgiving, of loving unconditionally, of sticking to the plan.

I don't think I have it in me, or maybe I don't have a clue yet. All I know is that I can't forgive an unfaithful boyfriend, so why on earth should I get a husband? Until I'm convinced that I can love unconditionally, and not search for the door for every red flag raised, then I'm staying right where I am. And where I am right now can be my version of forever.
